Exploring Circles

Sometimes all I need to start drawing is to give myself a simple shape to work with, in this instance a circle, and then see what I can do with it. How many variations can stem from one idea? In how many different ways can I draw a circle? That is how this collection of circular patterns and artworks began.

The symbol of a circle has so many meanings; eternity, the cycle of life and death, continuity, vitality, spirituality. To me it also symbolizes the earth, the moon, a sense of feeling whole and complete. Circles are also soothing to look at, more gentle on the eye than harsh angles.

I finished working on this collection while staying on an island in the Adriatic ocean, soaking up the colours and the shadows under water. The sea urchins reminded me of the drawings, so I named the collection after them.
